My Last Chance
by Zahra Marvi
”I really have to go now, Wendy,” says Judy. Judy´s my best friend.
”OK, bye.”
It is the last day of school. The last day of the eighth grade. And I´m
just standing here, waiting for the school bus to come. Well, I guess it
will be the last time I get to ride it. Next year I´ll have to take the
subway to Stuyvesant. I still can´t believe I made it. I turn around to
look at him. I can´t believe he didn´t! If you are wondering who ”he” is ,
”he” is Jim. I have had a huge crush on him since the beginning of the
year.
My friends told me that I should ask him out, but I don´t want to take the
chance. What is taking this bus so long? It is so boring standing out here
all alone. Everyone is leaving. Maybe I should talk to him. What can I say?
”Hi, jim.”
Silence.
H didn´t even hear me! Here comes Melanie. Jim asks her to wait and says
something to her which I can´t hear.
”Ok, so I´ll give you a call. Bye,” says Melanie. Then she walks off.
Wow! I don´t even feel comfortabe saying ”Hi” to this guy and she is going
to give him a call! Where did I go wrong?
Then Jenny comes along. ”Hey, everyone. I heard the bus won´t be coming,
so you better find some other way to get home.”
Oh, well. I´ll just walk home. A few steps down the street and I realize I
am not alone – Jim is walking in the same direction! He must be going to
his aunt´s house. She lives in my building!
So now we are walking together. What should I do? Should I try talking
again? I never really talked to him before. Why should I start now? We
will be there pretty soon. Why is he walking so fast?
I finally get enough courage to say something. ”Hi! Are you going to your
aunt´s house?”
”Yes,” he says, turning to me. He is so cute! We walk on in silence. I
can´t think of anything else to say to him. Before I know it, we´re there.
The doorman opens the door for us and we enter the building. Jim rushes
ahead of me. When I get to the elevator, he´s holding the door for me.
”Thank you,” I say.
He presses eight. I press nine. We are all alone in the elevator! Ok. If I
ask him out now, what is the worst thing he can say? He can say no. And
I´ll never have to face him again.
”Oh, I was wondering…ooo,” we both say at the same time.
”What did you want to say?” he asks.
”Oh…Never mind. You?” I wonder what he wanted to say to me.
”Um, never mind,” he says. The door opens and he gets off.
”Bye,” I call loudly.
”Bye, Wendy.” The door closes behind him.
